Renwick Hospital Memorial

Instructor: Dan Bucsescu

The memorial is situated within the ruins of Renwick Smallpox Hospital at the south end of Roosevelt Island, standing in reminiscence of past horrors. A corridor hangs 2 stories above ground, like phantom reincarnated, rendering an oppressive and dismal environment; while below it, in the the multi-sensory exhibition space, ghostly figures are projected onto the wall, fleeing and roaming restlessly.

Michael Mazur, The Corridor, 1965

The end of corridor leads to a view towards Louis Kahn’s Four Freedoms Park, providing the final moment of relief.
